ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Cortland dominated Nazareth in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday as the Red Dragons used a 27-2 shooting advantage to gain a 9-0 victory over the Golden Flyers in the season opener for both teams. The defeat spoiled the Nazareth coaching debut for
Tarah Christenson, who coached at Keuka last season.
Sophomore Jess Gibaldi scored four goals and senior Gabby Stein accounted for three others for the Red Dragons, who finished with a 14-5 overall record in 2015. Junior Meg Redmond and sophomore Jessica Welsh also scored for Cortland.
Gibadi scored less than 10 minutes into the game off an assist from Shannon McGuinness. Stein added her first two goals before the first half ended to give Cortland a commanding lead at the half.
Gibaldi scored three more times in the second half with Welsh adding two assists and Stein one.
Nazareth managed just two shots in the game -- both by sophomore
Leah Good -- and each was saved by Cortland goalkeeper Kailynne Reinoehl. Sophomore
Kimber Nourse played all 70 minutes in goal for the Golden Flyers and totaled 14 saves.
Nazareth is on the road Saturday for a non-conference game at Oswego at 7 p.m. The Golden Flyers are back home Wednesday against Wells at 6 p.m.
