Nazareth falls twice on Saturday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Nazareth women's volleyball team fell to nationally ranked teams in each of its Saturday matches at the Golden Flyer Invitational, hosted by Nazareth. In the Golden Flyers' opening match of the day, 13th-ranked Cortland defeated Nazareth in three-sets. The scores of the match against the Red Dragons were 25-18, 25-17, 25-17. In their second match of the day, the Golden Flyers fell to 19th-ranked Mt. Union in three sets by the scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-17.

Sophomores Maria Allocco and Olivia Harrigan were named to the all-tournament team for Nazareth. Cortland's Ashley Coyle was named tournament MVP and Aubrey Barrett was also named to the all-tournament team. Mt. Union's Taylor Webb and Nicole Snyder also received all-tournament honors.

Following the lnvitational, Nazareth stands at 4-4 overall. Cortland finished undefeated, and has an 8-0 overall record. Mt. Union finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. The Raiders' overall record is 5-3.

Senior Amy Johnson had a match-high 11 kills to lead the Golden Flyers against the Red Dragons. Allocco and Chelsea Beecher also tallied six kills apiece for Nazareth. Senior Brittany Crocetti recorded a team-high 18 assists, followed by senior Aubrey Cooke, who added 11 assists. Cortland's defense held the Golden Flyers to hitting percentages of .152, .189, and .121 through the three sets to prevent Nazareth's upset bid. The Red Dragons finished with a 6-1 advantage in total blocks.

Freshman Jennifer Goodman totaled a team-high 11 digs for Nazareth's defense, which held Cortland to a hitting percentage of .185 in the third set. The Red Dragons took control of the first two sets with effective attacks. Cortland had hitting percentages of .462 (14 kills and two errors) and .343 (15 kills and three errors) to take the two-set advantage.

Aubrey Barrett had a team 10 kills to lead Cortland's balanced attack. Four other Red Dragons finished with at least six kills. Kristen Guercio amassed a match-high 35 assists, and Ashley Coyle had a team-high 11 digs.

Against Mt. Union, Harrigan and Johnson each recorded seven kills, followed by Cooke, who had six kills. Crocetti recorded a team-high 16 assists while Cooke added nine assists. Goodman finished with a match-high 13 digs.

After falling behind by double-digits in the second set, Nazareth rallied to close to within a couple of points before the Raiders outlasted them. The Golden Flyers used a combination of kills, aces, and Mt. Union errors to close their deficit. The Raiders also built a large lead in the third set after building on the momentum from the second set.

Nicole Snyder finished with a match-high 12 kills for Mt. Union. Taylor Webb added 11 kills. Brittany Woodard and Sarah Schleich amassed 18 assists and 15 assists, respectively. Kristen Gromes finished with 10 digs to lead the Raiders.

Nazareth is in action again on September 11th when the Golden Flyers travel to Fredonia for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
