Nazareth settles for split on Saturday

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--Nazareth finished action at the RIT women's volleyball Invitational with a three-set victory over St. Lawrence before falling to RIT in three sets in their second match of the day. The scores in the Golden Flyers' victory over the Saints were 30-28, 25-22, and 25-18. Nazareth fell to the Tigers by the scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-23.

Following the tournament, in which the Golden Flyers finished 2-2, Nazareth stands at 6-7 overall. Going into its fourth match of the tournament, St. Lawrence was 0-3 in the invitational and 3-9 overall. RIT finished with a 4-0 record over the weekend and improved to 9-3 overall after knocking off the Golden Flyers. Sophomore Maria Allocco represented the Golden Flyers on the all-tournament team.

Senior Amy Johnson and sophomore Olivia Harrigan pounded out 16 kills and 12 kills, respectively, against St. Lawrence to combine for 28 of Nazareth's 41 kills. Allocco also chipped in six kills. Senior Brittany Crocetti amassed a team-high 35 assists to set up the majority of the Golden Flyers' offensive attacks.

On the defensive side, Harrigan finished with 10 digs to lead Nazareth. Crocetti finished just behind Harrigan with nine digs against the Saints.

Against RIT, the Tigers held Nazareth to hitting percentages of -.179, .129, and .125 to prevent the Golden Flyers from establishing an offensive rhythm. Nazareth stayed relatively close in the first set despite recording four kills and nine errors. Allocco had a team-high nine kills, followed by Harrigan with six kills and sophomore Kassandra Buseck with five kills.

Crocetti finished with 19 assists and two service aces. Johnson and freshman Jennifer Goodman each recorded three aces. Sophomore Katherine Race and freshman Melissa Kline added two additional aces apiece to help Nazareth finish with a 14-10 advantage in service aces.

Defensively, freshman Jennifer Hicks had five total blocks with three solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Goodman accumulated a team-high seven digs.

The Tigers' tenacious defense forced Nazareth to commit many of its hitting errors. RIT's Cat Sullivan had six assisted blocks and Katie Cooper and Christina Worth each contributed four assisted blocks. Bethany Davis had a match-high 14 digs. Suzanne Jokajtys amassed a match-high 10 kills, followed by Sara Martin with eight kills.

Nazareth is in action again on September 21st and 22nd when the Golden Flyers travel to Alfred for the first Empire 8 crossover of the season.
