Nazareth splits Saturday's matches

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- On Saturday afternoon, the Golden Flyers completed their matches at the Red Dragon Classic, hosted by Cortland. Nazareth defeated Fredonia in three sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-18, 38-36 to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record. Rochester outlasted the Golden Flyers in five sets 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-11 in Nazareth's first match on Saturday.

Following Saturday's matches, Nazareth sits at 2-2 overall. Rochester improved to 2-1 overall after defeating the Golden Flyers. Fredonia fell to 1-3 overall after falling to Nazareth.

Against Fredonia, the Golden Flyers compiled 17 kills in the third set to hold off the Blue Devils. Nazareth finished with a .244 hitting percentage in the third set. The Golden Flyers tallied a hitting percentage of .097 (nine kills) in the first set and .333 (11 kills) in the second set to build their two-set lead.

Sophomore Kassandra Buseck tallied a team-high nine kills, followed by eight kills by senior Amy Johnson. Freshman Jennifer Hicks and sophomore Chelsea Beecher also chipped in six kills and five kills, respectively. Sophomore Maria Allocco recorded three service aces to help Nazareth finish with a 9-6 advantage in aces.

Defensively, Beecher finished with 10 digs to lead the Golden Flyers. Freshman Jennifer Goodman also collected nine digs.

In Nazareth's first match of the day, Johnson had a team-high 15 kills while sophomore Olivia Harrigan recorded 14 kills. Buseck and Allocco each contributed seven kills against the Yellowjackets. The Golden Flyers opened with 13 kills in the first set for a .267 hitting percentage. Nazareth followed with hitting percentages of .296, .207, .143, and .312 through the remaining four sets.

On the defensive side, senior Brittany Crocetti amassed a team-high 19 digs, followed by senior Aubrey Cooke, who tallied 12 digs. Allocco had five total blocks with two solo blocks and three assisted blocks. Crocetti represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team.

Similar to their contest against Skidmore on Friday, the Golden Flyers built a two-set lead going into the third set but Rochester rallied for the victory. Nazareth hosts the Golden Flyer Invitational September 7th and 8th in its next matches. Nazareth opens the tournament at 4 p.m. on the 7th against Fredonia.
