NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Nazareth split a pair of women's volleyball matches Friday as the Golden Flyers close out their regular season this weekend with four matches at the New York State Challenge hosted by New York University.
The Golden Flyers lost their first match in four sets to NYU. Scores were 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22. The Golden Flyers then snapped a six-match losing streak by defeating Mount St. Mary in four sets by scores of 27-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23. Nazareth brings an overall record of 18-14 into Saturday's action. Nazareth plays Plattsburgh at 9 a.m. and Hunter at 1 p.m.
In the NYU match, sophomores
Maria Allocco and
Chelsea Beecher each had nine kills and senior
Brittany Crocetti had 24 assists. Freshman libero
Jennifer Goodman had 10 digs. Nazareth had significant leads in sets two and four before the Violets rallied. In the second set, back to back service aces by Allocco lifted Nazareth to a 14-6 advantage. A 15-4 scoring surge enabled NYU to square the match at one set each. After dropping the third set, Nazareth was up 20-17 in the fourth set, but NYU rallied to score eight of the last 10 points to seal the match.
Against Mount St. Mary, Nazareth got 12 kills from sophomore
Kassandra Buseck and 10 more from Beecher. Crocetti amassed 31 assists and nine digs and Goodman totaled 13 digs.
