Nazareth falls to Hartwick, Ithaca

UTICA, N.Y. -- Five sets have not been kind to the Nazareth women's volleyball team recently. The Golden Flyers dropped a pair of five-set matches Sunday at the Empire 8 Conference Crossover to finish the weekend with three losses to fall into a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings.

Nazareth, unbeaten in conference play entering the weekend, now stands at 4-3 in E8 matches and 17-13 overall. Nazareth has dropped five straight matches, including four in five sets.

Stevens and Elmira stand atop the E8 standings with 6-1 records. There is a three-way tie for third place between Ithaca, Nazareth and St. John Fisher -- all with 4-3 conference records. Elmira, via a regular-season win over Stevens, will be the top seed and host for the four-team E8 Tournament Nov. 3-4. Nazareth will be the fourth seed based on the tiebreaker criteria and Ithaca will be third. Nazareth will play Elmira in the tournament's first round Nov. 3.

Nazareth looked to be in control in both Sunday matches as the Golden Flyers won two of the first three sets in each. Hartwick rallied to win by scores of 19-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-23, 15-13 and Ithaca won by scores of 27-29, 25-13, 13-25, 25-21, 15-11.

Sophomore Maria Allocco had 12 kills and senior Brittany Crocetti had 25 assists and eight digs in the Hartwick match. Senior Amy Johnson and sophomore Chelsea Beecher each had eight kills and sophomores Taylor Stabley and Katherine Race had 12 and 10 digs respectively.

Against Ithaca, Allocco had 16 kills, sophomore Olivia Harrigan added 11 and Beecher 10. Crocetti had 49 assists and Johnson had 18 digs.
