ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth split its two non-conference matches on Saturday as the Golden Flyers overwhelmed visiting Brockport in three sets before falling to visiting Medialle in five sets. Nazareth used a balanced attack to defeat the Golden Eagles by the scores of 25-10, 25-19, 25-15. The Mavericks thwarted the Golden Flyers' rally attempt in their second match. The scores were 27-25, 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 15-12.
Following the matches, Nazareth stands at 17-9 overall. Brockport drops to 6-18 overall following its losses to Nazareth and Medaille. The Mavericks improve to 9-12 overall after defeating the Golden Eagles and Golden Flyers.
In Nazareth's match against Brockport, seniors
Aubrey Cooke and
Amy Johnson finished the match with nine kills apiece. In addition to the kills from Cooke and Johnson, seven additional Golden Flyers recorded at least one kill to provide Nazareth with its efficient attack. Sophomores
Jillian Van Cott and
Maria Allocco recorded six kills and five kills, respectively.
The Golden Flyers finished with hitting percentages of .556 in the first set (16 kills, one error), .167 in the second set (10 kills, five errors), and .429 in the third set (12 kills, three errors). Senior
Brittany Crocetti amassed a match-high 29 assists to establish Nazareth's offense.
On the defensive side of the net, Cooke and sophomore
Olivia Harrigan each recorded a solo block, and
Amy Johnson finished with three assisted blocks. Sophomore
Katherine Race and freshman
Jennifer Goodman each accumulated six digs while Cooke and sophomore
Olivia Harrigan each contributed five additional digs. The Golden Flyers held the Eagles to hitting percentages of -.100 in the first set (four kills, six errors), .100 in the second set (11 kills, eight errors), and -.130 (five kills, eight errors) in the third set.
The Golden Flyers finished with an 11-4 advantage in service aces. Cooke, Johnson, and Goodman each had three aces.
Hannalee Fordyce finished with a team-high eight kills and seven digs for Brockport. Jamie Snyder also added six kills. Sarah Zelko contributed 16 assists.
In its second match of the day, the Golden Flyers were led by Allocco, who finished with a team-high 15 kills. Cooke, Johnson, Harrigan, and sophomore
Kassandra Buseck each added eight additional kills for Nazareth's attack.
Medaille's Meghan Fahy and Lauren Kirby combined for 48 kills and only 15 hitting errors to lead the Mavericks' to the upset over Nazareth. The Mavericks won the first two sets with hitting percentages of .278 (14 kills, four errors) and .227 (16 kills, six errors) while holding the Golden Flyers to percentages of .265 (15 kills, six errors) and .150 (12 kills, six errors), respectively.
Trailing 20-16 in the third set, Nazareth scored nine consecutive points to take its first set of the match and claim the momentum. Harrigan had three aces during the run while Buseck, Johnson, and sophomore
Chelsea Beecher each had a kill. The Mavericks also committed three errors to allow the comeback. The Golden Flyers finished the set with a hitting percentage of .421 with 10 kills and two errors.
Nazareth held off Medaille in the fourth set with 13 offensive kills and three errors. The Mavericks committed nine errors in the set to finish with a .100 hitting percentage.
In the fifth set, Medaille surged to a 5-0 lead following three aces and two kills. The Golden Flyers scored 10 of the next 15 points to tie the score at 10-10, however, Fahy's kill to break the tie put the Mavericks ahead for the remainder of the set. Nazareth trimmed its initial deficit with four kills from Allocco.
Nazareth is in action again Wednesday evening when the Golden Flyers travel to the University of Rochester for a non-conference match.
