Nazareth competes at State Tournament

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Nazareth got first-round wins from five of its top six singles players Friday and Saturday as the Golden Flyers competed in the State Tournament for women's tennis, hosted by Ithaca.

Junior Alison Tepas and seniors Alex Vizgaitis, Christine Cary and Cara Yinger each won their first-round singles matches Friday and sophomore Krista Pagan won a first-round match Saturday. Tepas reached the semifinals at first singles with a straight-set win over NYU's Ashley Masanto. She lost to Ithaca's Christina Nunez 6-1, 6-1 in the semis.

At second singles, Vizgaitis lost her second-round match to top-seeded Lee Ford of Skidmore 6-0, 6-3, while Cary lost to Olivia Arroyo of St. Lawrence in the second round 6-3, 6-2 at third singles.

At fourth singles, Yinger lost her second-round match to William Smith's Casey Nicoletti 6-2, 6-3 and Pagan lost to Ithaca's Alyssa Steinweis 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles play, Tepas and Vizgaitis won two matches at first doubles to reach Saturday's semifinals, then lost 8-2 to Skidmore's top-seeded tandem of Ford and Nataly Mendoza. At third doubles, the tandem of sophomore Krista Pagan and freshman Ami Petosa won a first-round match, then were eliminated in the next round.
