ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting RIT downed Nazareth 72-60 in Empire 8 women's basketball action Tuesday night to earn its first conference win of the season. RIT is now 1-2 in the Empire 8 and 5-4 overall. Nazareth falls to 2-3, 7-4.
RIT carried a six-points lead, 36-30, into halftime, but Nazareth rallied to take a three-point advantage, 41-38, early in the second half following a basket by
Kylie Bartlett and a free throw by
Mary Holland. The Tigers, however, regained control as they embarked on a 19-2 scoring run that culminated with a 57-43 advantage with 8:11 to go.
RIT's Sharon Dennis, who finished with game highs in points (22) and rebounds (19), had seven points during the decisive run and Brianna O'Dell (20 points) also had seven, including a jumper with 13:08 to go that gave the Tigers the lead for good at 43-41.
After Holland's jumper at 12:05 the Golden Flyers were held scoreless for nearly eight minutes as the Tigers pulled away.
Brittany Wilson scored her only basket of the second half with 5:33 remaining to break the scoreless streak and cut RIT's lead to 12, 57-45.
Jenee Vanderstyne scored all six of her points in the final two minutes sinking three lay-ups. She was fouled on each but was unable to convert on the free throws.
Wilson had a team-high 18 points with all but two coming in the first half. She added four assists, three steals and five rebounds.
Ashley Gallagher was 5-of-6 from the field to finish with 10 points and Bartlett finished with 11 for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers continue conference play at Ithaca Friday, January 8th for a 6 p.m. match-up. Saturday they are on the road at Utica at 2 p.m. Nazareth will return to Rochester for the Wendy's Classic which beings on Tuesday, January 12th.
