Women’s Volleyball Dealt Season-Opening Loss by Fredonia, 3-1

ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Women's Volleyball (0-1) slipped to the visiting Fredonia Blue Devils (2-0) in four sets in Saturday's nonconference match inside Kidera Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first set, Nazareth extended its lead to 11-6 following a kill and a service ace on consecutive points by Alana Lucey. Fredonia rallied with a 14-2 scoring run to claim a 20-13 lead. The Golden Flyers closed to within 23-22 after kills by Lucey and Leah Fusili but the Blue Devils were able to hold off Nazareth and score the final points of the set, 25-22.
  • After the teams traded points to open the second set, the Golden Flyers rallied from an 8-4 deficit with a 9-1 run. Nazareth took advantage of Fredonia attack errors, Sloane Bell and Lake Ziober each contributed a kill, and Lucey's ace capped the run to give Nazareth the 13-9 lead. The Golden Flyers stretched their advantage to as many as six points, 23-17, toward the end of the set before taking the frame, 25-20. 
  • Fredonia pulled away in the second half of the third set. After the score was tied at 11 points apiece, the Blue Devils collected four of the next five points to take a 15-12 advantage. Trailing by six points, 21-15, Golden Flyers rallied to within three points, 22-19, but they were unable to narrow the deficit further before Fredonia earned a third-set 25-20 set win. 
  • Nazareth claimed the early lead in the fourth set, 4-1, following kills by Lucey, Anna Wade, and an ace by Bell. The Blue Devils answered with eight consecutive points to retake a 9-4 advantage. The Golden Flyers closed to within one point, 11-10, but Fredonia tallied eight of the next 10 points to take command of the set at 19-13. The Blue Devils continued to press before taking the final set 25-19. 
GAME NOTES
  • Alana Lucey finished with a match-high 15 kills. Since last fall, her total marks fourth time in five matches that Lucey has accumulated at least 15 kills.
  • Leah Fusilli followed Lucey with 11 kills and tallied a team-high 17 digs. In four out of the last five matches last season, Fusili has registered double-digit kills and at least 17 digs.
  • Hailey Trank amassed a match-high 28 assists, the fourth time in five matches that Trank recorded at least 25 assists.

The Golden Flyers travel to Case Western Reserve for matches on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12. Nazareth opens invitational play against The College of Wooster, Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m.
