Alfred, N.Y. (nazathletics.com) – The Nazareth men's lacrosse team seems unstoppable as of late as they continue to tear through the Empire 8 Conference. They faced off with the Alfred University Saxons on Wednesday for their third straight road game, and they continued to impose their will over their opponents. The Golden Flyers won the matchup by a score of 21-0, extending their 20-plus goal streak to six games and seeing 15 different players record at least a point. The contest also marked Nazareth's first shutout since 2023. The Saxons fell to 7-6 on the season (3-3 in conference) with the loss, while Nazareth improved to 8-6 (6-0 in conference) with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alfred won the opening draw and took the first shot attempt of the game, but it was Nazareth who struck first. Just over 2 minutes in, Matthew Farrington picked up an unassisted goal to kick things off. The Golden Flyers took control from that point forward, scoring 2 more goals in the ensuing 3 minutes to take a 3-0 lead early in the opening frame. The Golden Flyers went on to add on more just a few minutes later before spending the remainder of the quarter trading successful clears and shot attempts. Nazareth led in both of those categories, as well as in goals by a score of 4-0 at the 15-minute mark.
- It was in the second period that the Golden Flyers really began dominating the Saxons. They scored twice early on and peppered the Alfred goalkeeper with shots before pushing the flood gates open with 11:36 remaining. Nazareth went on to score 7 more goals, none of which came more than 2 minutes apart. This offensive outburst was powered by a relentless shooting attack that saw the Golden Flyers outshoot the Saxons 30-3 on the quarter (16-1 on goal). Nazareth also overpowered Alfred on ground balls, winning in that category by a total of 19-9. Naz led 13-0 at halftime.
- The Golden Flyers began slowing down the offence after the half and the shots began evening out slightly. Nazareth continued to roll when they did get their opportunities however, as Hayden Lucas got the third frame's scoring underway at about the 11-minute mark. The quarter resumed in similar fashion to the previous one, where all it took was one goal to get Nazareth rolling again. They went on to score 5 more goals upping their total on the game to 19. Alfred remained scoreless, but they did manage 9 shot attempts in the quarter.
- The pace of play and offensive aggression slowed to a crawl in the fourth and final period of play, as Nazareth played to maintain their shut-out while the Saxons attempted to keep their deficit from rising even higher. The shot attempts in the quarter were 7-7, and shots on goal were only 5-2 for the Golden Flyers. Nazareth tacked on 2 more scores to lift them above the 20-goal mark they seem to love hitting, while their defensive play remained perfect as they kept Alfred off the scoreboard to secure the shutout. The final score of the affair was 21-0.
