Women’s Lacrosse Falls at Buffalo State, 9-6

BUFFALO, NY (nazathletics.com) – A six-goal first quarter proved too much to overcome as Nazareth (0-4) dropped a 9-6 decision at Buffalo State (2-0) on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State struck first with three goals in the first five minutes before Nazareth got on the board at 8:06 when Gwen Newtown finished a man-up goal off an assist from Grace Gardner to make it 3-1.
  • The Bengals added three more in a quick stretch to jump out to a 6-1 lead with four minutes left in the opening quarter. 
  • Gardner notched the first score of the second period at 8:21 before Buffalo State answered to push the lead to 7-2. 
  • Nazareth responded with back-to-back goals from Megan Martin at 6:02 and Gardner at 5:00, trimming the deficit to 7-4 heading into halftime.
  • Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter as Golden Flyer goaltender Allie Klestinec came up with multiple saves to keep Nazareth within striking distance.
  • Buffalo State extended the lead early in the fourth to 8-4, but Nazareth answered at 9:20 when Elizabeth Smith buried her first goal of the season to make it 8-5. 
  • Gardner added another score late off an assist from Sydney Dann to pull Nazareth within two at 8-6, but the Bengals tacked on an insurance goal with 41 seconds left to seal the 9-6 final.
GAME NOTES 
  • Grace Gardner led the way offensively with four points on three goals and an assist, her third hat trick in four games. 
  • Gwen Newtown recorded one goal and two assists for three points. 
  • Elizabeth Smith scored her first goal of the season in the final frame. 
  • Megan Martin added a goal in the second quarter.
  • Allie Klestinec made multiple key saves throughout the contest, totalling eight on the afternoon.
