Softball Picks Up Two Wins on Opening Day in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Softball (2-0) opened up the 2026 season in Florida with wins over Alverno (0-2), 22-2, and Edgewood (0-2), 6-2, Saturday at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex. 

GAME ONE: NAZARETH 22, ALVERNO 2 (5 INNINGS) 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bryanna Moroughan opened the game with a double down the left-field line, stole third and scored on Kaijah Alexander's RBI double while Haleigh Suitor followed with an RBI single to give Nazareth an early 2-0 lead.
  • After Alverno scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Madison Hicks struck out the opposing pitcher to end the inning and strand runners, keeping the Golden Flyers in front 2-1.
  • Nazareth broke the game open with a seven-run second inning as Morgan Russo delivered a three-run double to left center, Suitor followed with an RBI double, Caitlyn Knapp added an RBI double and Maddy Spakoski capped the rally with a two-run single to extend the lead to 9-1.
  • Hicks continued to control the game in the circle, striking out two in a perfect second inning and finishing with six strikeouts across five innings while allowing just one earned run.
  • The Golden Flyers added another seven-run frame in the third as Hicks drove in two with a double to center, Spakoski followed with an RBI single and Moroughan cleared the bases with a three-run double before Alexander added an RBI single to push the lead to 16-1.
  • Nazareth kept adding on late with Ruby Marrapese and Moroughan drawing RBI walks in the fourth, Alexander lining a two-run double and Addison Mayers bringing home another run on a groundout before Emma Maloney drove in the final run in the fifth to complete the 22–2 win.
GAME NOTES
  • Bryanna Moroughan and Kaijah Alexander contributed four RBIs each with two doubles. Alexander went 2-for-3 while Moroughan grabbed two stolen bases in her collegiate debut. 
  • Maddy Spakoski and Morgan Russo knocked in three runs apiece with Spakoski going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. 
  • Madison Hicks pitched five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, while scattering five hits and striking out six. 

GAME TWO: NAZARETH 6, EDGEWOOD 2 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After three scoreless innings, Nazareth broke through in the fourth when Kaijah Alexander launched a solo home run to left field to open the scoring. Later in the inning, Haleigh Suitor doubled and Caitlyn Knapp followed with an RBI double to left, extending the lead to 2-0.
  • Amanda Linnenbrink kept the momentum in the circle, striking out three batters through the first three innings and stranding runners to preserve the early lead.
  • Nazareth erupted for four runs in the fifth inning. Singles from Ella Maloney, Ruby Marrapese and Bryanna Moroughan loaded the bases before Alexander lined a two-run single to right, scoring Maloney and Marrapese to make it 4-0.
  • The rally continued as Morgan Russo grounded out to bring in Moroughan, and Haleigh Suitor added an RBI single, pushing the advantage to 6-0 after five innings.
  • Linnenbrink remained in control, recording a strikeout to open the sixth inning and finishing with five strikeouts while limiting the opponent to three hits across seven innings.
  • The opponent scored twice in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single but Nazareth closed the game cleanly in the seventh, retiring the side in order as Linnenbrink ended it with a swinging strikeout
GAME NOTES 
  • Kaijah Alexander went 2-for-3 at the plate for the second-straight game of the afternoon, grabbing three RBIs and smashing her first home run of the year in the fourth inning. Her solo blast puts Alexander in a tie with Laura Persico (07-09) atop the Nazareth career home leaderboard with 17. 
  • Amanda Linnenbrink tossed a complete game in her Nazareth debut, allowing two runs on three hits while fanning five. 
UP NEXT 
Nazareth continues Spring Games action with tomorrow's doubleheader against Ursinus and Endicott. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:30 pm at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex.
