ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Women's Basketball (17-4, 11-1) took down SUNY Brockport (14-7, 10-2), 81-65, Friday night inside Kidera Gymnasium. The victory moves the Golden Flyers into sole possession of the Empire 8 lead with four games left in the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nazareth set the tone early, using second-chance points and inside finishes to turn a brief tie into a steady first-quarter edge, closing the opening period up 19-14 behind baskets from Sarina McDowell and Leah Fusilli.
- The Golden Flyers broke the game open in the second quarter, ripping off a decisive run sparked by Molly Benetti in the paint and a momentum-shifting three from Payton Littlefield, pushing the lead to double digits and taking a 45-31 advantage into halftime.
- Nazareth maintained control coming out of the break, answering every Brockport push with timely scoring as Katie MacLachlan and Benetti combined to keep the margin comfortably in double figures through most of the third.
- Brockport briefly found rhythm late in the third, trimming the deficit, but Nazareth closed the quarter strong to enter the fourth ahead, 66-53.
- The Golden Flyers put the game away early in the fourth with disciplined possessions and trips to the free-throw line, stretching the lead to 16 and forcing Brockport into empty possessions down the stretch.
- Nazareth closed out an 81-65 win by controlling the final minutes, sealing the result with free throws and defensive rebounds to protect the lead without allowing a late run.
GAME NOTES
- Molly Benetti led the Golden Flyers with 18 points in the victory, her 13th double-digit scoring performance of the season. She added eight rebounds and three assists.
- Sarina McDowell notched 15 points along with a team-best nine rebounds, her 10th game in double figures this year.
- Katie MacLachlan and Madalyn Kelly rounded out Nazareth's double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece. MacLachlan also contributed a team-high nine rebounds and five assists.
