Women’s Basketball Falls to Geneseo in E8 Semifinals, 54-48

ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Women's Basketball (22-5) fell to SUNY Geneseo (19-9) in the Empire 8 Semifinal round, 54-48, Wednesday night inside Kidera Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nazareth opened with defensive pressure and second-chance points, taking an early 11-9 lead after a putback layup by Molly Benetti and a late second-chance finish from Katie MacLachlan to close the first quarter.
  • The Golden Flyers extended the margin to 19-17 at halftime, highlighted by MacLachlan's tip-in and a steal from Kylie Anglin that led to a fast-break layup at the buzzer, swinging momentum into the break.
  • In the third, Benetti kept Nazareth within striking distance, converting a second-chance layup and later drilling a 3-pointer to trim the deficit to four, 34-30, while Kiara Anglin added a transition layup off a turnover to make it a one-possession game.
  • Nazareth rallied in the fourth as MacLachlan scored in the paint and Madalyn Kelly added a go-ahead bucket, tying the game at 45-45 before converting a free throw to give the Golden Flyers a brief 46-45 edge with 1:40 remaining.
  • Down the stretch, Sarina McDowell answered with a paint jumper to cut it to two in the final seconds, but Geneseo sealed the 54-48 decision at the free-throw line. 
GAME NOTES 
  • Molly Benetti led the Golden Flyers with 21 points in her final collegiate contest, her fifth game with 20 or more points this season. She added three blocks, two rebounds and one assist. 
  • Katie MacLachlan and Sarina McDowell contributed a team-best eight rebounds apiece.
