ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Men's Volleyball (7-5, 0-0) pushed No. 18 Buffalo State (10-1, 2-0) to five sets before falling in the final frame, 3-2, Wednesday night inside Kidera Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Buffalo State opened the first set on a 7-1 run and built a 10-2 lead before Sean Frawley, Ryan Murphy and Tristan Henderson helped trim the margin to 12-10. The Golden Flyers later closed within 23-19 on a Quinn Ringstad kill, but the visitors held off the push to claim the first set 25-20.
- The Golden Flyers answered in the second set with a 25-23 win, erasing multiple late deficits. Tied 21-21, Nazareth capitalized on an attack error along with a block from Quintin Chiles and Murphy to regain the lead. Chiles delivered the set-clinching kill as Nazareth hit .500 in the frame and sided out at 70 percent.
- The Golden Flyers opened the third set on a 5-1 run and pushed the lead to 6-2. Buffalo State answered with a 5-0 stretch to tie the set at 7-7 and later moved in front at 9-8. Nazareth stayed within striking distance, cutting the deficit to 16-15 on a block from Austin Drews and Chiles. Trailing 23-21, Nazareth came within 24-22 on a Burda kill, but could not extend the set as Buffalo State finished it off, 25-22.
- A decisive mid-set run in the fourth set forced a fifth with a 25-20 Nazareth win. Leading 9-5 after back-to-back AJ Burda kills, the Golden Flyers stretched the margin to 20-16 on a Burda ace and a Murphy finish. Nazareth totaled 17 kills in the set and evened the match at 2-2.
- Nazareth battled in a back-and-forth fifth set but fell 19-17. The Golden Flyers led 8-5 at the switch after kills from Murphy and Joe Seliger, along with blocks from Chiles and Ringstad. Tied 17-17 late, Nazareth could not convert on the final two rallies as Buffalo State closed the match.
GAME NOTES
- AJ Burda registered his first career triple-double with 41 assists, 10 kills at .563 and 10 digs against the Bengals. He contributed four service aces and three blocks for a team-best 15.5 points.
- Quintin Chiles earned the first double-double of his career with a team-high 13 digs and 10 kills, his second contest with double-digit kills and digs this season.
- Tristan Henderson and Sean Frawley led the Golden Flyers with 11 kills apiece, Henderson's coming at a team-best .647 hitting percentage. Frawley added four digs, one block and one service ace for 12.5 points.
- Ryan Murphy, Quinn Ringstad and Austin Drews notched six blocks apiece, helping Nazareth outblock Buffalo State, 15-7. Murphy rounded out the Golden Flyers' double-digit attackers with 10 kills and two service aces.
- Gavin Sweet tallied 12 digs at libero, his third match this season with double-digit digs.
