ROCHESTER, NY (
nazathletics.com) - Behind another strong offensive performance from
Savanna Biehler and a standout effort in goal from
Katriana Walls, Nazareth earned its fifth straight win on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Houghton 3-1. The Golden Flyers improved to 7-2-1 and now sit at 5-1 in Empire 8 play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a defensive start by both sides, Katriana Walls made a huge save 15 minutes into the contest to keep it scoreless. The Highlander attacker was coming down on a break, which forced Walls to make a diving save with her right hand.
- Just a minute later, Savanna Biehler drew a foul in the box, awarding her a penalty kick where she made no mistake burying it into the bottom right corner to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 lead.
- Just under four minutes later, the Golden Flyers struck again. Giuliana Rodriguez curled a left-footed corner kick directly into the back of the net, extending their lead to 2-0.
- With just six minutes left in the first half, a great cross from Camryn Schiavitti found a jumping Biehler whose header hit the crossbar and stayed out, keeping the Nazareth lead at 2-0.
- After some nice pressure from Nazareth, Houghton turned it the other way and capitalized on a Golden Flyer mistake with a rocket from outside the box, beating Walls to cut the lead to one.
- In the 54th minute, Lillian Fejko's attempted pass deflected off a Houghton defender and beat the goalkeeper to extend the Golden Flyer lead to 3-1. The play started with an in-tight shot from Mikayla Perez which was stopped by Houghton but the rebound bounced right out to Fejko.
- Houghton would apply solid pressure as they pushed to get back in the game but Nazareth would hold strong the remainder of the game to win it, 3-1.
