Men’s Hockey Battles No. 4 Oswego State to a Shootout Win

OSWEGO, NY –   The Nazareth men's hockey team erased an early deficit and built a three-goal lead before settling for a hard-fought 4–4 tie against No. 4 Oswego State on Tuesday night at the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena. The Golden Flyers improve to 9-6-2 overall, 3-5 in the UCHC, while the Lakers remain at 13-2-2, 10-1 in SUNYAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Nazareth wasted little time getting on the board, striking early in the opening period to set the tone. Oswego responded to tie the game, but the Golden Flyers regained the lead late in the first when junior Kai Shen finished off a scoring chance to send Nazareth into the second period up 2–1.

The Golden Flyers carried their momentum into the second period. Shen scored his second goal of the night just minutes in, and senior Owen Heidelberger followed shortly after to give Nazareth a commanding 4–1 advantage. Oswego answered back later in the period with two goals, including a power-play goal in the final minute, cutting the Nazareth lead to 4–3 heading into the third.

Oswego controlled much of the puck possession in the final period, outshooting Nazareth as the Golden Flyers focused on defending the lead. With the Lakers' net empty in the closing minute, Ryan Burke found the back of the net to even the score at 4–4 and force overtime.

Both teams had chances during the five-minute extra session, but neither side could capitalize as the game ended in a tie.

To end the night, Nazareth and Oswego went into a shootout, with Nazareth taking the win.
