POTSDAM, NY- Although the first minutes showed no signs of either team having control over, by the 17
thminute, St. Lawrence began to pull away, creating more opportunities to score. The Golden Flyers had an answer to the Saints' first goal, but couldn't respond to their second, scored in the 65
th minute. With the loss, Nazareth drops to 2-1 on the season, while St. Lawrence improves to 1-1-2.
How it Happened:
Nazareth came out poised in the beginning minutes. Their fierce defensive line stood strong against St. Lawrence's physical offense. The Saints stifling defense shut down any play before a shot attempt could be made by the Golden Flyers. As the game progressed, St. Lawrence began to pull away with 10 shot attempts, while Nazareth had only one. The Saints scored a goal created by a corner kick in the 38
th minute.
The Golden Flyers came out of halftime energized. In the 51
st minute,
Taylor Ashe dribbled up the left side of the field, beautifully crossing the ball to the center of the field.
Shannon Sgombick's first shot was saved, but her second shot found the back of the net, tying the game.
Although the Saints began to rack up shot attempts, Nazareth was showing that the quality of the attempt may matter more than the quantity. Despite the quality of Nazareth's shot attempts, a free kick resulted in a goal for St. Lawrence in the 65
th minute. Nazareth created many chances to score up until the buzzer sounded, but was unable to finish, resulting in a 2-1 loss.
