Women’s Volleyball Succumbs to Juniata, Christopher Newport

HUNTINGDON, Pa. (nazaathletics) - Nazareth Women's Volleyball (0-10) fell to No. 4 Juniata (10-1) and RV Christopher Newport (7-5) in straight sets Saturday inside Juniata's Memorial Gymnasium. Senior Zipporah Sparkman was named to the All-Tournament Team. 

MATCH 1: JUNIATA 3, NAZARETH 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Juniata jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first set. The Eagles dominated the remainder of the frame, holding Nazareth to just nine points to secure a 25-9 stanza victory.
  • The Eagles went on a 6-0 run to start the second set before the Golden Flyers won three straight points to get on the board, 6-3. Juniata continued its momentum in the second frame, registering six consecutive scores to take the set 25-10. 
  • Juniata began the third set up 5-0 until Nazareth chipped away at the Eagles defense to come within three points at 20-17. Both opponents traded points in the final moments of the frame before Juniata finished out the set with two straight kills, 25-20.
MATCH NOTES 
  • Leah Fusilli led the Golden Flyers with four kills, one service ace and two digs for five points 
  • Jenna Mattison and Sara Glose recorded a team-best seven digs apiece from the back row 

MATCH 2: CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT 3, NAZARETH 0

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Nazareth and Christopher Newport went back and forth early in the first set until the Captains recorded six straight points to lead 12-6. CNU concluded the frame on a 7-1 run to take the first set 25-14.
  • Christopher Newport registered six straight points again in the second set to gain a 12-4 edge. Both teams swapped points late in the frame before the Captains capitalized on four consecutive scores to go up 22-10 and close out the set, 25-12.
  • CNU took the first five points of the final set, maintaining its advantage for the entirety of the frame to a 25-15 victory. 
MATCH NOTES 
  • Freshman Alannah Roberts led the Golden Flyers with a season-high four kills at .214 in just her fourth appearance 
  • Leah Fusilli tacked on four digs and three kills in her second appearance of the day 
UP NEXT 
Nazareth hosts its home opener against Buffalo State, Wednesday, Sept. 24. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. inside Kidera Gymnasium.
