Ferruzza Hits Walkoff Homer in Extra Innings in Game 2 of Doubleheader Against Buff State

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Golden Flyers tallied two more wins in a doubleheader against Buffalo State on Wednesday evening, taking the first game 2-1 and the second 5-4 in extra innings. Three Golden Flyers hit home runs in the two games including Morgan Russo with one in the first and one in the second, Kaijah Alexander with one in the second, and Sarah Ferruzza in the second game who hit a two-run walkoff in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the win for Nazareth.

Nazareth's overall record improves to 9-6 following the wins, while Buffalo State drops to 8-10 overall.

Nazareth Wins 2-1
In the first game, Buffalo State started the scoring early with a run in the first inning. The Golden Flyers were slow to wake up the bats, only having one hit in the first two innings.

After holding the Bengals scoreless in the top of the second and third innings, Nazareth finally got on the board with a two-run homer from Russo following a single from Ashley Bell. Despite the Bengals having runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh, Russo's third inning hit proved to be the game-winner in the low-scoring game as Nazareth was able to scrap its way out of a tough situation without letting any Bengals score.

Avery Zembek was in the circle for the Golden Flyers in the first game, not giving up any earned runs while tallying four strikeouts, one of which was in a critical moment in the seventh inning with two runners on base.

Ferruzza Calls Game with Walk-off Homer in the 5-4 Victory
The second game started similarly to the first, the Bengals scoring two runs in the first inning, followed by goose eggs for both teams until the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Russo again knocked a two-run homer over the fence to score herself and Bell, who had singled just before. With two outs, Alexander followed suit with a single home run to put the Golden Flyers up 3-2.

In the top of the sixth the Bengals took the lead back with two more runs, but the Golden Flyers were quick to tie it back up in the bottom as Ferruzza scored on a wild pitch after doubling to right field.

A scoreless seventh inning brought about extra innings, and with them the international tie breaker rule was in place. The international tie breaker places a runner on second base at the beginning of the eighth inning for each team. Buffalo State was able to bring its runner around on an error to make the score 4-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.

Knapp was Nazareth's runner placed on second, who was advanced to third on a sac bunt by Haleigh Suitor. Ferruzza then called game with a two-run walk-off homer to close the game at a score of 5-4.

Alexander started the game in the circle for the Golden Flyers. She allowed three earned runs and had one strikeout with 28 batters faced in five innings. Zembek relieved and was awarded the win complete with zero earned runs and two strikeouts with 13 batters faced in three innings.

The Golden Flyers will be back in action on Saturday, April 12th as they head to Keuka for a 1 and 3 p.m. conference double-header.
