ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Golden Flyers split in a conference double header with Elmira college, taking the first game 6-3 and dropping the second 4-2.
Ashley Bell and
Kaijah Alexander had homeruns in the win, Bell tallying her first of the season and Alexander marking her seventh.
Nazareth Wins 6-3
Nazareth came out strong from the first pitch in the first inning. After holding Elmira to three-up three-down in the top, the Golden Flyers put two on the board in the bottom.
Morgan Russo started the inning with a single. With one out and Russo on first, Alexander crushed one over the fence to put Naz up early 2-0.
The Golden Flyers put another run on the board in the bottom of the second after blanking Elmira again in the top. Nazareth's run was Bell, hitting her first homer of the season.
In the top of the third, Elmira cut the lead by one with an unearned run to make the score 3-1 heading into the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, after holding Elmira scoreless in the top, the Golden Flyers scored another run, bringing Russo around unearned to make the score 4-1 in favor of Nazareth.
In the top of the fifth, Elmira went on a two-run-rally to cut the lead to one. However, the Soaring Eagles' rally was negated in the bottom of the sixth when Nazareth put up two more runs. Bell opened the bottom of the inning with a triple and was brought home on a single from Russo.
Julia Maciag advanced Russo with a sac bunt, and Alexander scored Russo with a single. Heading into the seventh inning, the Golden Flyers led 6-3.
The top of the seventh was three-up three-down defensively for the Golden Flyers, complete with a strikeout, a ground-out to
Avery Zembek in the circle and a ground-out to Russo at first base to complete the win at a score of 6-3.
Zembek pitched the full game for Nazareth, earning the win complete with four strikeouts and only allowing one earned run with 28 batters faced.
Nazareth Outlasted 4-2
In game two, the Golden Flyers once again got the bats going early in the game, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Maciag scored Nazareth's lone run on a single by
Sarah Ferruzza after getting on base on a dropped-third-strike opportunity.
After a silent second inning for both teams, the Golden Flyers tallied another run in the bottom of the third. Scoring for Nazareth was once again Maciag who had a single to get on base and was then knocked in on a single by
Madison Hicks to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Golden Flyers.
After another silent inning in the fourth, Elmira woke its bats up, putting up three runs in the top of the fifth to take its first lead of the day. Nazareth couldn't quite seem to get back on the board for the remainder of the game despite getting a few runners on base. Elmira scored another run in the top of the seventh, making the final score 4-2 in favor of the Soaring Eagles.
Hicks threw for 4.2 innings and was credited with the loss. Hicks had two strikeouts and allowed two earned runs within 27 batters faced. Zembek was in the relief, throwing 2.1 innings complete with two strikeouts within nine batters faced, only allowing one earned run.
The Golden Flyers will be back in action on April 15
th at 3 and 5 p.m. in another conference double header against Houghton University.
