UTICA, N.Y. – Neither SUNY Poly nor the cold, wet weather could slow Nazareth's women's lacrosse team Wednesday evening. The Golden Flyers surged to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter enroute to a 15-2 Empire 8 Conference victory. Nazareth received goals from nine different players, led by
Sophia Scialdone and
Makenna Misiurewicz, who tallied three goals apiece.
Following its victory against the Wildcats, the Golden Flyers extend their winning streak to three games; they stand at 6-4 overall and 2-0 in conference games. With the loss, the Wildcats drop to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in Empire 8 games.
Nazareth established its dominance in the opening minutes of the game with five goals in the first 5:04 of the quarter.
Grace Gardner started the scoring just 38 seconds into regulation. Following Gardner's goal, Scialdone,
Katherine McPeak,
Liddie Hoare, and Misiurewicz added to Nazareth's lead.
Following the Golden Flyers' initial onslaught,
Julia Dietz recorded Nazareth's sixth goal after receiving a pass from Misiurewicz. Less than two minutes after Dietz's goal,
Grace Morse scored her first goal as a Golden Flyer after receiving a pass from
Katherine McPeak. Scialdone tallied Nazareth's last two goals of the stanza, which gave her a hat-trick in less than 11 minutes of action.
SUNY Poly was given a green card in the closing seconds of the first, and the Golden Flyers needed only six seconds of the second quarter to stretch their lead to 10-0. Scialdone passed to
Emily Reichard, who converted the player-up opportunity. After the Wildcats scored their first goal of the game, Misiurewicz reclaimed Nazareth's double-digit lead midway through the period.
Roughly one minute into the third quarter, Misiurewicz completed her hat-trick after receiving a pass from
Amber Enright. Enright's assist was her first-career point.
A couple of minutes later,
Megan Martin scored her first-career goal.
Grace Morse and Martin each added their second goal of the season in the closing minutes of the quarter.
Allie Klestinec was credited with the victory after playing the first half. She recorded three saves and one goal against.
Gianna Tantalo had four saves and one goal against in the second half.
Nazareth is in action again on Saturday when the Golden Flyers host Hartwick in an Empire 8 game at 1 p.m.
