ROCHESTER, NY - In the final conference game of the season, Nazareth hosted Elmira in a senior day celebration where the Golden Flyers swept the Soaring Eagles 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-19). The seniors honored in the pre-game ceremony were
Owen Wickens,
Alex Bertino,
Anthony Caimano,
Max Stuver,
Josh Weaver,
Andrew Bodensteiner, and
Jake O'Sullivan. Wickens led the Golden Flyers in kills (tied with Bertino), aces, and blocks, while Bertino tied to lead the Golden Flyers with 10 kills, and Stuver led the team in assists.
Nazareth's win over Elmira secured an Empire 8 Champion title for the team, as Nazareth extends its overall record to 18-10 and its conference record to 5-2.
Though the Golden Flyers held the lead through the entire first set, the set was a battle throughout, Nazareth not able to overcome more than a three point lead until late in the set when the Golden Flyers went up 19-15. During the remainder of the set, Elmira brought the lead down to one three times, but could not quite close the gap and Nazareth took the first set 25-23. 17 of the Golden Flyers' 25 points came from kills.
After a bit of back and forth in the second set, the Golden Flyers went on an eight point run at a tie score of 5-5 to hold a comfortable lead at 13-5. Elmira was not able to come back from the deficit and the Golden Flyers took the second set 25-14.
In the third set, at a tie score of 9-9 after trading points, the Golden Flyers scored three consecutive points including two aces from Wickens to build some momentum. For the remainder of the set, Nazareth did not allow Elmira to bring the game within less than two points, earning a third-set-win and overall sweep with a final set score of 25-19.
Wickens and Bertino led the team in kills with 10, Wickens also leading in aces with four, and blocks with three. Stuver led the team in assists with 35. Bertino and Stuver also popped up five digs each. Senior Weaver was second on the team in kills with eight, while senior Bodensteiner added seven kills, one ace, and two blocks. Freshman
Ryan Murphy also had seven kills on an impressive attack percentage of .875, while also throwing down two blocks, and serving three aces. Freshman
Bodey Groff led the team in digs with 12.
The Golden Flyers will be back in action on the weekend of April 11th-13th for the UVC Championship tournament at NYU. The quarterfinals will be on the 11th, the semis on the 12th, and the finals on the 13th. Nazareth will be the number 2 seed, so the Golden Flyers get a bye to the semifinal round on the 12th where Nazareth will take on the winner of the No. 3 vs No. 6 seed game.
