ROCHESTER, NY - Women's lacrosse hosted the first game of the season on Wednesday evening where they were able to secure an 11-9 victory over Fredonia.
Makenna Misiurewicz had four of Nazareth's 11 goals.
With the win, Nazareth earns a 1-0 overall record and Fredonia opens the season 0-1.
The game started out quiet from both sides despite either team getting multiple shots off. The score was 0-0 for almost the entire first quarter until
Julia Dietz was able to find the back of the net with 39 seconds left in the quarter to score an unassisted free position goal and put Nazareth up 1-0 heading into the second.
Less than four minutes into the second quarter, Nazareth scored again, this time
Katherine McPeak going unassisted to the goal. Not much long after, the Blue Devils scored their first goal of the game to make the score 2-1 in favor of Nazareth. With 6:34 left to go in the half, Misiurewicz scored her first goal off an assist from Dietz. The score would remain 3-1 heading into the third quarter.
In the first half alone, goalkeeper
Allie Klestinec had eight saves.
It only took thirty seconds of the third quarter for Nazareth to score again, this time
Sophia Scialdone placing a smart shot for a free position goal. 18 seconds later, McPeak scored again off a pass from
Grace Gardner to put Nazareth at a fairly comfortable 5-1 lead.
However, later in the third period Fredonia struck back with their own back-to-back goals to cut the lead down to two.
Misiurwicz answered with a free position goal just 30 seconds later to put Nazareth back up to a three goal lead at 6-3. In the last half of the third period, Nazareth and Fredonia each traded two more goals, Nazareth's coming from goals by
Liddie Hoare and Scialdone. They were assisted by Scialdone and
Emily Reichard respectively. Heading into the final quarter of play, Nazareth was up 8-5.
Fredonia scored a quick goal within 16 seconds of the last quarter to put the pressure on the Golden Flyers. Misiurewicz scored her third goal of the evening at the 12:54 mark to put Nazareth back up to a three point lead, but the Blue Devils had it back within two at 9-7 by the 11:44 mark.
A card for Fredonia gave the Golden Flyers a man-up opportunity where Misiurewicz drained Nazareth's 10th goal to go up 10-7 with 8:18 left to play.
Fredonia had another pair of back-to-back goals at time stamps of 6:17 and 6:02 to cut the defecit to one and force a Nazareth time out.
Nazareth's defense forced Fredonia into a saved shot and a turnover to give the Golden Flyers the ball back with 2:37 left to play. After a good clear, Scialdone scored at the 1:34 mark to put Nazareth up 11-9 where the score would stay for the remainder of the game.
Klestinec finished the game with 11 saves. Nazareth went 24-26 in clear attempts, grabbed 14 ground balls, won 13 draw controls, and went 2-7 on free-position shots.
