Nazareth Women’s Basketball Falls to Rochester 74-58 in Crosstown Shootout

PITTSFORD, NY - The Nazareth women's basketball team (3-2) dropped a 74-58 contest to the University of Rochester (2-3) on Saturday evening in day two of the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout, hosted at St. John Fisher University. 


WHAT HAPPENED: 

Nazareth opened the game with competitive energy, trading scores with Rochester before the Yellowjackets used on 8-0 run run to take an 18-15 lead after the first quarter. 

Rochester continued to build momentum in the second, shooting 40 percent from the field and knocking down four 3-pointers from senior Tess Schuey and strong defensive pressure on Nazareth, the Yellowjackets carried a 39-26 advantage into halftime. 

The Golden Flyers responded in the third quarter with improved efficiency, shooting 43.8 percent while getting balanced scoring from Schuey, senior Katie MacLachlan, and junior Sarina McDowell. Nazareth scored 18 points and maintained a 56-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

Nazareth continued to battle in the final quarter, highlighted by a stretch of fast-break points and a pair of threes, but Rochester's depth and rebounding advantage helped the Yellowjackets extend their lead to as many as 21. The Yellowjackets closed out the win, handing Nazareth a 74-58 setback. 

Nazareth shot 35.1% (20-for-57) from the floor and 37.5% (6-for-16) from three, while Rochester finished at 41.9% (26-for-62) and connected on 10 three-pointers. 
 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Schuey led Nazareth with a team-high 16 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the field and a perfect 7-for-9 at the free-throw line. She also added two rebounds and four steals. 
  • MacLachlan contributed 13 points, including 3-for-5 from three-point range, along with three assists and three rebounds. 
  • Senior Molly Benetti added 8 points and a team-high 6 rebounds, while McDowell finished with 7 points, four rebounds, and two assists. 
  • Sophomore Payton Littlefield delivered 10 points and hit two threes. 
  • Nazareth excelled in transition, finishing with a 13-2 advantage in fast-break points.
  • The Golden Flyers also scored 27 points off turnovers, fueled by 13 team steals.

Nazareth returns to action on Saturday, December 6, when the Golden Flyers travel to face Alfred University at 2 p.m.
