Houghton, N.Y. – The Nazareth women's soccer team played a hard-fought, physical match against the Houghton Highlanders on Saturday. They carried the play, taking 25 shots to Houghton's 7, but suffered a late goal against to lose the game 2-1.
How It Happened
- The first 10 minutes of the match consisted of the two teams feeling each other out, each applying some pressure but no real threats either way
- In the 14th minute, senior Tatum Overton had a dangerous opportunity in close on the goal, firing the ball just low and wide of the net
- Just thirty seconds later, Nazareth found the back of the Highlanders net to take an early 1-0 lead. The goal was scored by junior Shannon Sgombick, who picked up her own rebound off of the Houghton keeper inside the box and fired it home for her third goal of the season
- The Highlanders scored an equalizing goal in the 34th minute, coming off of a corner that soared over every Golden Flyer defender before being headed in from close range
- An even first half came to a close with Nazareth leading in corners (2-1) and total shots (6-3), but the score remained tied at 1 goal apiece
- Just back from the half, sophomore Carolina Lott-Diamond fired a rocket of a shot off of the Houghton crossbar, coming inches away from giving the Golden Flyers the lead
- In the 56th minute, a Houghton player was sent in alone against senior keeper Delaney Malone, who made a steady save to keep things knotted up
- Nazareth generated chances off of in-close shots from juniors Mikayla Perez and Sgombick in the 61st minute, but both were kept out of the net by the Houghton keeper.
- The game remained tied until the 84th minute, when the Highlanders were awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. They capitalized on the opportunity, taking a 2-1 lead with little time remaining.
- In the 87th minute, Nazareth junior Camryn Schiavitti was awarded a free kick of her own from about 25 yards out, firing her shot off of the crossbar and over the net.
- Time ran out on the Golden Flyers who tried desperately to tie the game back up. They fall to 4-4-2 while Houghton improves to 7-3-1 on the season.

The Golden Flyers head to Brockport, NY on Wednesday, October 8th for a 4pm Empire 8 conference matchup against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles.
