Women’s Soccer Wins Big Over SUNY Poly, 5-0

Utica, N.Y. – The Nazareth women's soccer team took an Empire 8 conference matchup against SUNY Poly by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday. Nazareth improves to 7-5-3 on the season and 5-2-2 in conference play, clinching an Empire 8 postseason berth, while Poly falls to 1-13-2 overall. 

How It Happened
  • The Golden Flyers came out swinging, scoring the first goal of the game in the 9th minute of play. Senior Tatum Overton buried the rebound off of the goalkeeper after a long shot from senior Makaelynn Neivel that almost found the mesh
  • Junior Shannon Sgombick got on the board second for Nazareth, scoring in the 43rd minute to give the Golden Flyers a 2-0 lead
  • Nazareth took its two-goal lead into half-time after a dominant first 45 minutes. They took 15 shots to Poly's zero and carried the play throughout the entire first half of play 
  • Once again Nazareth wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, as freshman Giuliana Rodriguez fired a shot from 30 yards out that sailed over the goalkeeper and into the Poly net in the 48th minute
  • Overton scored her second goal of the game in the 64th minute to give the Golden Flyers a 4-0 lead. She controlled a long cross into the box before turning and firing it into the bottom right corner of the goal
  • Junior Camryn Schiavitti capped off the scoring for Nazareth in the 83rd minute with a penalty kick goal, marking her first of the season
  • The Golden Flyers ended the match with 34 shots to SUNY Poly's three, putting on a dominant performance and extending their undefeated streak to four games in a crucial stretch of the season.
What's Next
Nazareth's next match will take place Saturday, October 25th in Elmira, NY against the Elmira University Soaring Eagles for another important conference matchup as the regular season nears a close
