ROCHESTER, NY – Junior
Shannon Sgombick found the back in the 81
st minute off an assist from senior
Alice O'Connor to help lift Nazareth 1-0 over Utica on Saturday at Golden Flyer Stadium on Senior Day. Prior to the game, the Golden Flyers honored 8 seniors in
Taylor Ashe,
Mikaela Campbell,
Delaney Malone,
Haley Dennison,
Makaelynn Neivel,
Lauryn Obey,
Alice O'Connor and
Tatum Overton. Nazareth is now 6-5-3 overall, and 4-2-2 in league play, while Utica drops to 7-5-4 and 4-2-3, respectively.
How it Happened:
- Just over seven minutes in, Overton beat a defender on the endline and ripped a shot that was saved to keep the score 0-0
- It was a fairly even first half with 10 shots for Nazareth and 8 for Utica – each team generated one corner kick
- Three minutes into the second half a nice buildup and move by Carolina Lott-Diamond saw a shot go over the bar
- With 23 minutes remaining in the game Overton played a beautiful ball to Giuliana Rodriguez whose one-time shot at the 18 bent just outside the post and out of bounds for a great opportunity
- After peppering in the offensive zone most of the game, Nazareth finally broke through in the 81st minute. O'Connor played a long diagonal ball that bounced past a charging keeper, allowing Sgombick to kick it into the open goal
- Overton rocked a shot from 25-yards out with six minutes off the post which nearly gave the Golden Flyers a two-goal lead
- Delaney Malone made four saves in the first half and Katriana Walls made three in the second half to combine for the shutout
