CORTLAND, N.Y. - On Tuesday evening, Women's Ice Hockey fended off nationally ranked Cortland at the Red Dragon's home arena, tying in regulation, and winning in a shootout.
Amy Laskowski was the lone scorer for the Golden Flyers in regulation and also added a shootout goal.
The first period yielded an exciting start of the game for the Golden Flyers. Nazareth was serving a penalty, giving the Red Dragons a power play at the 12:54 mark, but Laskowski was able to put one past Cortland's goalie in a short-handed goal. The Golden Flyers then held Cortland scoreless for the remainder of the power play and the first period, holding a 1-0 lead heading into the second period of play.
The second period of play was silent for both teams, despite either side getting a few shots on goal. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Golden Flyers heading into the last period of regulation.
At the 7:37 mark in the third, Cortland was able to score the game-tying goal after getting multiple shots off. Nazareth and Cortland held each other scoreless for the remainder of the period, sending the game into overtime.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first overtime,
McKinley Hoff saving three goals, so the game went to a shootout. In the shootout, Laskowski scored again, as well as
Sofia Pittis, to give Nazareth the shootout win (2-1).
Hoff had a total of 23 saves in the game.
The Golden Flyers will be back on the ice on January 24th at 6:30 p.m. as they take on Chatham University at Tim Horton's Iceplex.
