ROCHESTER, NY –
Corsica Skibinski and
Brooke Terry each tallied a goal as the Nazareth women's hockey program conquered Hamilton 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Tim Hortons Iceplex.
With the win, the Golden Flyers are 9-5, while the Continentals drop to 4-8-1. The two teams have met in the last two NCAA Championships in the first round.
Nazareth took just 1:42 to set the tone on a goal from Skibinski. Skibinski held the puck behind the net for some time before wrapping around to her forehand and beating the Continentals goaltender.
The score remained 1-0 until the 15:32 mark when a strong forecheck paid off for the Golden Flyers to make it 2-0.
Sami Quackenbush kept a puck clearing attempt in the zone and
Ivey Lyden found Quakenbush on the backhand for a strong attempt on goal, only to have Terry hammer in the rebound.
Hamilton was able gain a little bit of momentum late in the period, netting an even strength goal to bring the score to 2-1 heading into the second intermission.
Although the third period didn't have any goals scored, it was eventful. Nazareth had a 5-on-3 opportunity for :35 seconds at the beginning of the period, but were unable to convert. Still leading 2-1, Nazareth took a penalty with four minutes remaining but the penalty kill delivered as well as the defense with the Continentals pulling the goalie with under minute to play.
McKinley Hoff made 19 saves in the win.
Nazareth returns to action next Tuesday, traveling to Cortland for a 5 pm contest.
