MORRISVILLE, NY – The 13
th-ranked Nazareth women's hockey team faced yet another formidable opponent on Friday, falling victim to three third period goals to drop a 3-1 decision to Elmira in the Morrisville Mustangs Cup. Elmira came into the contest receiving votes in the latest USCHO poll.
Nazareth has now lost its last three contests, beginning with #7 Plattsburgh, followed by #3 Amherst. The Golden Flyers sit at 7-5 overall, while Elmira moves to 9-4-1.
With the loss, Nazareth will square off against either Morrisville or Western New England in the consolation game at 12 pm on Saturday.
It was Nazareth who would find the net first in the second period as
Abby Flanagan and
Corsica Skibinski took advantage of a 2-on-1 rush. Flanagan took the puck down the right side, fired a shot that was initially saved, before Skibinski jammed it in the open net 6:45 into the period.
Elmira scored two strong goals, one on the forehand and on the backhand, roofed into the top of the net about 1:30 apart early in the third period to take a 2-1 lead.
The score remained 2-1 until late in the game when a mishandled puck deep in the Flyers zone was converted into the Soaring Eagles third goal of the game.
McKinley Hoff stopped 28 shots in the contest.
Nazareth went 0-for-2 on the power play and Elmira 0-for-3.
