ROCHESTER, NY – After dominating the game from its entirety, sophomore
Joey Weaver eventually broke through in the 64
th minute to propel Nazareth to a 1-0 conference victory over Keuka on Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Liam Brandt got his first start in net and earned the victory.
With the win, head coach
Matt Tantalo picked up his 200th career win. Tantalo was 16-3-1 in three seasons at Elmira, 104-62-16 in 11 seasons at Keuka, and no 80-39-19 at Nazareth for a total of 200-132-38.
Nazareth is now 5-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in Empire 8 play, while Keuka drops to 0-7 and 0-3, respectively.
Neither team was able to score in the first half. Nazareth's best chance of the first came with less than four minutes remaining as
Tommy Gillett ripped a low driven-shot from outside the 18 that was blocked of the line by a Wolves defender.
Nazareth finally broke through in the 64
th minute on a corner kick from
Drew Decker. Decker's left-footed in-swinging cross found the foot of
Spencer Neil and was headed in by Weaver. Decker now has eight assists on the year and has recorded at least one assist in seven of eight games this season. It was Weaver's first-career goal.
In the 75
th minute,
Michael Yates nearly doubled the Golden Flyers lead, but the Wolves goalkeeper made a great save to clear it away.
The Golden Flyers held a 24-2 edge in shots for the game.
Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to the University of Rochester for a 7 p.m. contest.
