ROCHESTER, NY – Junior
Tatum Overton scored a pair of goals, one in each half, to help guide the Nazareth women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout win over Mount Saint Mary (NY) on Friday in the season opening game. Nazareth dominated from start to finish, holding a 26-5 advantage in shots for the game.
The Golden Flyers will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Stevens at 3 p.m. Stevens fell to RIT 2-1 on Friday in its opening game of the season.
Nazareth opened up the scoring in the 10
th minute as Overton, the leading scorer from a season ago (10 goals), headed home a cross from
Shannon Sgombick at the 6-yard box. Sgombick sent a driven left-footed cross from just outside the box into the streaking Overton for the goal.
Lauren Richie had a point-blank shot late in the half turned aside and the score remained 1-0 at the half.
Nazareth had a 10-1 edge in shots after 45 minutes of play.
Overton netted her second of the day in the 65
th minute as she got all the way behind the defense on an assist from junior transfer
Taylor Ashe (William Smith). Overton had a well-timed run just inside of midfield, beat the keeper streaking out, and tapped the ball in.
The Golden Flyers had several strong chances throughout the game, including freshman
Tessa Muskopf hitting the crossbar in the 83
rd minute.
Annika Monfort notched her 27
th career shutout after making three saves.
