ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Josh Weaver recorded a team-leading 18 kills and had a .484 attack percentage to lead the Nazareth University Men's Volleyball team to a key United Volleyball Conference (UVC) win over MIT Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Kidera Gym.
Nazareth (18-8), ranked No. 20 in the latest AVCA National Poll, dropped the first set 25-16 but tied the score with a 25-22 win in the second set. MIT (16-7), ranked No. 15 in the AVCA poll, rallied for a 25-19 win in the third set to regain the overall lead but the Golden Flyers took the fourth set, 25-20, and then completed the come back with a 15-11 win in the fifth set.
The win puts Nazareth in sixth place in the conference standings
Weaver had four of his 18 kills in the final set and capped a 4-1 run at the end of the set with his 18th kill of the day for the win.
Nazareth led 11-10 late in the fifth set before back-to-back kills by senior Owen Wickens and junior Alex Bertino gave the Golden Flyers a 13-10 edge. A block by freshman Nathan DeJoy and Weaver pushed the score to match point and after a service error, Weaver capped the match with a kill with an assist from sophomore AJ Burda.
Wickens finished with 14 kills while Weaver had 18 kills and four digs. Junior Max Stuver and Burda combined for 43 assists and Burda added five digs. Graduate student Jonathon Jackson led the defense with seven digs.
Nazareth travels to the New York City area next weekend for UVC matches at New Paltz (Friday) and at NYU (Saturday) to close out the regular season.
