ROCHESTER, NY- The third-ranked team in the nation showed its offensive firepower on Friday night, defeating the Nazareth men's hockey team 11-3 in the first UCHC league game of the season.
Nazareth is now 1-1 on the season and the Pioneers move to 2-1-1.
The visitors had a rapid start to the game, scoring two goals in the first 2:19.
Nazareth was able to hang in after the initial Pioneer surge, and
Kai Shen eventually pulled the Purple and Gold to within 1 with six minutes left in the period.
Daisuke Egusa fed a long diagonal pass to Shen who beat the goaltender on the blocker side.
The second period was a wild one, with seven goals scored in total.
Utica made it 3-1 early in the period before
Cole Bauman put in a goal to pull within 3-2.
Staring at a 5-2 deficit near the midway point,
Anthony Quinlivan got in on the scoring action off assists from
Logan Tobias and
Blake Frost.
The Pioneers responded with two goals to make it 7-3 heading into the second intermission.
Three more goals were scored before Nazareth's final goal, a tip-in from
Harrison Dumas. Assists were credited to
Josh Dressler and
Liam Quinlivan.
Dylan Wiemer played 29:15, allowing five goals and making 22 saves.
Matt Sayles finished the game, allowing six goals and making 15 saves.
Nazareth will travel to Utica on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest.
