Men's Hockey Ties Chatham 3-3, Fall in Shootout

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Anthony Quinlivan scored the game-tying goal with :34 seconds remaining on the clock to help the Nazareth men's hockey team earn a 3-3 tie against Chatham on Friday night at Tim Horton's Iceplex. After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, the Cougars secured the extra point by taking the shootout 1-0.

Nazareth is now 1-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the UCHC, while Chatham moves to 0-2-1 both overall and in the UCHC.

The first period saw a pair of goals, one from each team. Chatham was able to take advantage of a power play opportunity, netting the first goal of the game with 3:30 left in the period.

Nazareth was able to respond with just over a minute to play, as Ethan Louisos found Joey Schaefer in the slot for a one-time shot. It was the seniors second goal of the season.

Lincoln Crosby had several huge saves in the opening period, including on a breakaway. He finished the game with 15 saves.

In the second, Nazareth took the lead with eight minutes remaining. Schaefer ripped a shot that snuck behind the Cougars goaltender and Louisos banged it in. Liam Quinlivan also picked up an assist on the play.

Chatham made good on its second power play of the game with 3:35 remaining to even the score at 2-2. The score remained that way into the second intermission.

The Cougars took the lead three minutes into the third period to take a 3-2 lead. Nazareth put itself at a disadvantage late in the game by taking a penalty that would have left only :08 seconds on the clock when it returned to even strength. With :51 seconds to play, Nazareth pulled the goalie to make it 5-on-5 action, eventually tying the game with :34 seconds to play. It was a sequence of shots, one from Schaefer, one from Quinlivan, and a rebound attempt by Quinlivan to eventually equalize.

Nazareth held a 4-2 edge in shots for the overtime period.

In the shootout, Chatham scored first and the rest of the five shooters were unable to find the net.

Nazareth and Chatham will square off again on Saturday with a 3 p.m. puck drop at Tim Horton's Iceplex.
