ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A pair of second-half goals enabled visiting Penn State Behrend to rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit for a 2-1 non-conference women's soccer victory over Nazareth Friday at Golden Flyer Stadium.
The game was the home opener for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 0-2-1 overall. The Lions are 1-2 overall after recording their first-ever victory over the Golden Flyers in five meetings.
The defeat was disappointing for the Golden Flyers, who misfired on some quality first-half chances before settling for the 1-0 advantage. Less than two minutes into the game, junior
Haley Glassman drew a penalty kick after being fouled inside the 18-yard box. Her attempt was kicked away by Lions' keeper Riley Morningstar and the rebound came back to Glassman, who chipped a shot over the crossbar.
Less than a minute later, freshman
Lauren Richie broke free along the right wing and fired a shot off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Yet another opportunity came in the 32nd minute when a shot by Alexander Skoda grazed the right goal post.
Nazareth finally converted in the 36th minute when a Penn State Behrend clearing pass settled on the right foot of
Olivia Foley, who lofted a shot that reached the inside of the right goal post for an unassisted score and a 1-0 Nazareth lead.
The momentum shifted in the 52nd minute as a Nazareth defensive breakdown left goalkeeper
Annika Monfort out of position and enabled the Lions' Trinity Prestash to intercept a pass and to deliver an unassisted score that tied the game. Just over 16 minutes later, the Lions untied the game as Lizzie Hoff created some space along the left-wing side and fired a left-footed shot into the the upper right corner of the goal, over the outstretched reach of Monfort.
Monfort finished with five saves, while Morningstar had six for the Lions. Nazareth had an 11-9 edge in shots.
Nazareth is home again Saturday for a 2 p.m.meeting with Wheaton College of Illinois. The Thunder dropped a 1-0 decision at RIT Friday.
