Box Score UTICA, NY – It took 66 minutes to break as a scoreless draw as Utica's Byamungu Mugushu converted a breakaway to help lead the Pioneers 1-0 over Nazareth on Saturday night. The loss was the first of the season for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth is now 7-1-1 and 2-1 in Empire 8 play, while Utica is 3-4-2 and 1-0-1 in league play.
The Golden Flyers were awarded a penalty kick in the 22
nd minute when
Drew Decker dribbled by a few defenders in the box before getting clipped to earn the opportunity.
Jake Pawlika took the penalty, driving a low shot to his left but had it saved on the ground by the Utica keeper.
The Pioneers held a 7-5 edge in shots after the first half of play.
Mugushu scored the lone goal of the game as he got behind the defense in a foot race, taking a shot that hit goalkeeper
Patrick Larkin and re-directed back in by Mugushu. Larkin made six saves in net.
Nazareth nearly evened the score on a re-directed header from
Tyler Warmington that had to be pushed over the bar by Utica's goalkeeper in the 79
th minute.
Shortly after, Decker took his shot at evening the score as he stole the ball, beat two defenders and then hit a shot just wide of the net.
Each team finished with 13 shots.
Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday, hosting #12 Rochester (5-1-3) at 4 p.m.
