ROCHESTER, NY – Juniors Jake Pawlika, Drew Decker and Ryan Fitzgerald each scored a goal and freshman Jack Lannon notched his first career goal to lead the Nazareth University Men's Soccer team to a 4-2 win over Morrisville Sunday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Nazareth (2-0-0) opened the scoring in the 14th minute as sophomore Quentin Herrmann headed a ball out of the Nazareth defensive box to the foot of Decker who dribbled past four defenders over a 60-yard sprint into the box at the other end of the field before beating the Morrisville (0-2-0) goalie for the early 1-0 lead.
In the 30th minute, the Golden Flyer doubled the lead as Fitzgerald finished a play for his first goal of the year. Sophomore Sam Romanosky took a throw in from deep in the Morrisville zone that went into the box and was headed out by a Mustang defender but landed on the foot of Fitzgerald who fired a one-timer into the back of the net from 25 yards out.
Nazareth took the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
Early in the second half, Morrisville cut the lead in half with a shot off a direct kick from 22 yards out.
Less than two minutes later, Pawlika scored his second goal of the season with a free kick at the other end of the field from a similar distance away. His shot rang off the crossbar and went straight down off the goalie and across the goal line as the Golden Flyers regained the two-goal lead.
The Mustangs battled back again in the 66th minute with a goal from the top of the box after the Morrisville player dribbled past a pair of defenders and into the box to make it a 3-2 Nazareth lead.
Just 12 minutes later, Fitzgerald finished a play with a header off a pass from freshman Tyler Warmington for the final margin of victory.
Nazareth held a 15-10 shots advantage and had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Flyers return to action Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. game against SUNY Poly on the turf field at Nazareth.
