ROCHESTER, NY – After a 30-minute delay prior to the start of the game due to weather and a premature end to the game due to a town ordinance that calls for all stadium lights to be turned off at 9:30 p.m., the Nazareth University Men's Soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 final score.
Nazareth (3-0) scored in the 18th minute after a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick and junior Jake Pawlika drilled a shot into the lower left corner for the only goal of the game.
Both teams had scoring chances in the second half and SUNY Poly (1-2-0) was starting to line up for a free kick from the edge of the box in the Nazareth defensive zone with 32.7 seconds remaining. The clock was stopped as the players were getting set before the lights in the stadium went dark.
The referees met briefly and called the game final when it was determined that the light would not be able to be turned back on.
For Pawlika, it was his third goal of the season as he scored in each of the first three games for the Golden Flyers. The goal was his 23rd career tally which puts him tied for 10th on the all-time Nazareth goal scoring list. His career points total of 59 is also tied for 10th all-time with Dave Knieriemen who had 59 points from 1987-90 and James Wheeler who recorded 59 points playing from 2010-12 and in 2014.
Nazareth hits the road for a pair of games at Hilbert (Saturday) and at Hobart (Wednesday) before returning home September 16 to open Empire 8 play against Russell Sage.
