Late First Half Try and Strong Second Half Downs Rugby

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Patrick Notaro recorded a pair of first half penalty kicks for the Nazareth University Rugby team but a try near the end of the first half and three second half scores gave Fairfield University a 34-6 win in the season opener on the Upper Field.

Notaro gave Nazareth (0-1) an early lead with a three-point penalty kick 7:21 into the contest.

Fairfield (1-0) responded after a long drive with a try down the sideline but the conversion kick failed for a 5-3 Fairfield lead.

After a red card penalty put the Golden Flyers down a man for the remainder of the game, Nazareth regained the lead as Notaro made a another kick from straight on and 20 yards out for a 6-5 Nazareth lead at the 33:40 mark of the first half.

Fairfield scored another try just before the end of the first half and hit the conversion kick to take a 12-6 lead into the halftime break.

The Mustangs held most of the momentum in the second half with an early kick for three more points and then added three more scores and two conversion kicks for the final score.

Nazareth will hit the road for its next two matches at Harvard (September 23) and at Brown (September 30) before returning home October 7 for a match against Siena College on the Upper Field.
