CANTON, NY – Senior Grace Lanzetta passed a ball to the foot of junior Haley Glassman who took a couple dribbles to the top edge of the box before firing a low shot into the corner of the goal to give the Nazareth University Women's Soccer team (0-0-1) a 1-0 lead and the Golden Flyers settled for a 1-1 tie with St. Lawrence to open the season.
Lanzetta took advantage of some open space in the middle of the field as she controlled the loose ball with her chest and dribbled quickly into the offensive end of the field before sending a low pass forward to Glassman who found a seam between a pair of St. Lawrence (0-0-1) defenders before dribbling to the top edge of the box before taking the long shot into the lower corner of the goal.
With less than five minutes to play in the second half, the Saints capitalized on a free kick from outside the box and lofted a pass into the front of the goal and the loose ball was knocked in to tie the score.
In the first half, each team had offensive runs and pressure with St. Lawrence controlling the play in closing minutes of the period.
With 5:44 left to play, the Saints made a run up the right side and after cutting into the box fired a low hard shot but Monfort made a diving stop. In the final minute of action, the Saints were awarded a free kick from five yards outside the box and a high pass into the box was punched down by Monfort who then smothered the loose ball to keep the game scoreless.
Nazareth will continue the North Country road trip with a 1 p.m. game against Clarkson Saturday.
