YOUNGSTOWN, NY – The Nazareth Rugby team won its four pool play matches by a combined score of 162-0 with victories over two teams from RIT, one from Colgate and the Buffalo State team but the Golden Flyers dropped a 36-0 decision to St. Bonaventure in the championship match Saturday at the Battle at the Border Tournament at Lake Niagara Park.
Khyree Poole led the Golden Flyers with six scores on the day as Nazareth beat RIT 46-0 in its first match and then downed Colgate 35-0. The Golden Flyers added wins of 33-0 over a second RIT squad and a 48-0 rout of Buffalo State to earn a spot in the championship match against perennial power St. Bonaventure.
Nazareth dropped a 36-0 score in the final match with just 20 minutes of rest after the Buffalo State match to prepare for the title matchup.
A total of 10 different players scored for Nazareth on the day with freshman Owen Barr, senior Steven Beck and freshman Dajour Holmes each scoring three times. Senior Khalil Lynch, freshman Rashawn Bowen and junior Rahmel Beal added two scores each.
Junior Tyreik Thomas, junior Jacob Townsand and freshman Tyshaun Wilson had one try each.
Nazareth will scrimmage against Syracuse University Saturday on the Upper Field.
