ROCHESTER, NY – (Nazathletics.com) On a gorgeous October Sunday afternoon, the RPI Engineers men's rugby team visited Nazareth, with the Golden Flyers dominating for a 60-24 win.
Nazareth now stands at 3-1 in the Liberty Rugby Conference with 15 table points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
RPI opened the scoring with a try from 50 meters out and converted it for a 7-0 early lead. Nazareth bounced back with a beautiful grubber kick down the sideline from senior captain
Sal Hernandez to junior
Zayan Mohammed for the try, with conversion, for a 7-7 tie early in the first half.
Sophomore
Kameron Walls had a heads up quick strike from 25 meters out to put Naz ahead 12-7. Nazareth never looked back. The Golden Flyers pushed the pace fast for the final 20 minutes of half one to cruise to a 36-7 halftime lead. Additional first half tries were scored by sophomore
Zakariah Zaddem, freshman
Gunnar Tyrrell, senior
Devin Clarke, and freshman
Cameron Driscoll.
The second half was physical and fast paced. RPI had heavy carries in rapid succession up the middle of the field to score a few times. Nazareth responded back with quick hitting scores of their own. Credit to RPI for their aggressive defense and never backing down. Nazareth's maul was dominant off their lineouts and provided an excellent attacking platform. The Golden Flyers' decision making and fast attack proved enough to stave off RPI's comeback attempt.
After trading tries back and forth all second half, the score settled at Nazareth 60, RPI 24. Second half try scorers for Naz were; junior
James Moore, (2),
Zayan Mohammed (2), and junior
Conner Nicks. Nicks earned player of the match honors for Naz for outstanding defense and an outstanding 80 meter try to cap the scoring on the last play of the game.
