Farrington Scores Game-Winner as Time Expires for 11-10 Win

BROCKPORT, NY – Freshman Matthew Farrington scored as time ran out in the fourth quarter to give the Nazareth Men's Lacrosse team a thrilling 11-10 victory over SUNY Brockport Wednesday afternoon on A. Huntley Parker, Jr. Field.

After Nazareth (3-6) took a 10-6 lead early in the fourth quarter, Brockport (2-5) rallied for four straight goals in the final seven minutes of the period to knot the score at 10-10.

In the closing seconds, the Golden Eagles had a shot from short range but graduate student Eric Almquist came up with the save as the ball became lodged in the facemask of the goalie.

Nazareth moved the ball up the field quickly and a shot from junior Quinn Conroy was wide of the net but the Golden Flyers retained possession and called a time out with 6.7 seconds left to play.

Coming out of the stoppage, Farrington started the play behind the Brockport goal and moved to the front of the net with a spin move and then used a second spin to open up space for a shot and beat the Brockport goalie over the shoulder for the game-winning goal as time expired in the fourth quarter.

Nazareth opened the game with an early lead as senior Clifford Pollard put the Golden Flyers on the board with a pass from Farrington from behind the goal.

The teams traded goals for the first quarter as sophomores Sean O'Brian and Andy Hamel scored for Nazareth for a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Each team scored to start the second quarter with junior Quinn McKercher scoring for the Golden Flyers.

With Nazareth holding a 4-3 lead, Louis Cogliandro started a streak of three straight goals with a man-up goal. Freshman Luke Suchyna won the ensuing face-off and raced in for the shot and goal for a 6-3 lead.

Sophomore Owen Riley capped the run a few minutes later for the 7-3 lead with 1:29 left in the half.

Brockport added a late goal as Nazareth led 7-4 at the break.

Each team scored twice in the third period as McKercher and senior Greg Bilek each scored for Nazareth.

Freshman William O'Neill scored to start the final period to give the Golden Flyers a 10-6 lead with 8:18 left to play.

Brockport started it's four-goal fourth quarter rally with 6:27 remaining and the Golden Eagles tied the game with 1:55 left on the clock.

Bilek finished with a goal and three assists while McKercher had two goals and Farrington had a pair of points with the game-winning goal and an assist.

Almquist finished with nine saves while Brockport goalie Cameron Kuzniar kept the game close with 19 saves.
