Women’s Basketball Races Past Houghton at Home

ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Kiara Anglin rattled home a 3-pointer to cap a 16-0 run early in the second quarter as the Nazareth Women's Basketball team erased an early deficit and rolled to a 73-51 victory over Houghton Friday night in an Empire 8 game at Kidera Gym.

After a close first quarter, Houghton (14-5 overall, 7-5 Empire 8) took a 21-16 lead with a 3-pointer to start the period.

Graduate student Jadyn Abrams answered with a 3-pointer to spark the decisive run. Freshmen Brielle Reidinger and Katie MacLachlan hit back-to-back baskets to give Nazareth (15-5, 11-2 Empire 8) the lead at 23-21. Reidinger added two free throws and Abrams added a lay up to extend the run before Anglin hit a jumper and drained her 3-pointer as the Golden Flyers raced to a 32-21 edge.

At the end of the quarter, graduate student Caley Cornwell hit a 3-pointer and MacLachlan added another jumper as Nazareth took a 40-25 lead into the break.

Anglin started the second half with a jumper before Abrams added two more free throws and MacLachlan hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 22 at 47-25 and Nazareth cruised to the win.

Abrams led all scorers with 17 points and Anglin added 12. Reidinger, MacLachlan and Cornwell each scored nine points as 11 different players scored for Nazareth. The key run in the second quarter came on the strength of 69.2 percent (9-for-13) shooting from the field including a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range.

Nazareth continues the home Empire 8 weekend with a 2 p.m. matchup with Medaille at Kidera Gym.
