Almquist Makes 15 Saves As Naz Defeats Springfield 10-8 in Season-Opener

ROCHESTER, NY – Goaltender Eric Almquist made six of his game-high 15 saves in the fourth quarter, helping Nazareth to a 10-8 victory over Springfield on Saturday in the Golden Flyers home-opener at NLPA Field. Junior Quinn McKercher led the Golden Flyers with four goals and one assist.
 
After holding a 4-3 lead at halftime, Nazareth surrendered three-straight goals in the third, which pushed the Pride ahead 6-4 with just over four minutes to play.
 
That fortune quickly turned as McKercher netted his second of the day just :08 seconds later, which started a run of four goals for the Golden Flyers to close out the period.
 
Matthew Farrington scored his lone goal of the game at 3:06 from McKercher which evened the score at 6 apiece.
 
Nazareth then took the lead for good on Louis Cogliandro's second of the day with just under two minutes to play. The high-flying Flyers added one more goal on the extra-man advantage, McKercher's third of the day, to take an 8-6 lead into the fourth.
 
Springfield put some pressure on with a goal seven minutes into the fourth to pull within 8-7, but Nazareth answered with Braeden McKercher finding the back of the net.
 
Quinn McKercher got an ever-important goal with 2:23 remaining to push Nazareth's lead to 10-7.
 
Almquist saved his best for last, making several crucial saves down the stretch, to allow Nazareth to gain possession and run down the clock.
 
Springfield added one more goal late to close out the scoring.
 
The Pride scored the first two goals of the game and it was 3-2 in favor of the visitors after a period.
 
Quinn Conroy added a goal and an assist, while Greg Bilek chipped in a goal and two helpers.
 
The Golden Flyers finished the game 3-for-5 on the extra man advantage. Quinn McKercher, Jack McOsker, Jesse Woodill, and Sean O'Brian each had four ground balls in the winning effort.
 
Nazareth returns to NLPA field on Saturday, taking on Geneseo at 12 p.m.
