ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Nazareth's women's basketball team defeated host Hartwick 54-40 in an Empire 8 contest Friday evening. Senior
Jadyn Abrams scored a game-high 14 points to give her 1,710 points on the season. Freshmen
Kiara Anglin and
Brielle Reidinger joined Abrams in double-digits with 11 points apiece.
With the victory the Golden Flyers improve to 18-6 overall and 14-3 in conference games. Following the loss, the Hawks drop to 7-16 overall and 5-12 in the Empire 8. Additionally, Nazareth secured the second seed in the conference tournament, which includes a first round bye. In the semifinals, the Golden Flyers will play the winner of the third seed and sixth seed with the final seeding being determined with the results of this weekend's action.
The Golden Flyers used a 13-4 scoring run at the end of the third quarter and through most of the fourth to extend a 33-30 edge into a 46-34 advantage. Anglin connected on a pivotal three-pointer from the right corner with 10 seconds to play in the third to give Nazareth an eight-point lead heading into the final stanza. In the opening minutes of the fourth, Abrams hit a jumper before Reidinger converted a turn-around shot in the lane.
With about five minutes left in regulation, Anglin drove to the basket from the corner and scored a layup to give Nazareth a double-digit lead, 44-33. Just over a minute later, Reidinger found Abrams near the basket with a quick interior pass to extend the Golden Flyers' lead to 46-34. Nazareth pulled away by holding the Hawks without a point for nearly five minutes during the fourth.Â
The Golden Flyers finished with a 47-45 edge on the glass, led by Reidinger with 10 rebounds. Reidinger is only five rebounds away from tying the single-season record of 222 rebounds for a freshman, which was set by Rachel Benedict during the 2016-17 season. Nazareth forced Hartwick into 14 turnovers, which included a game-high four steals for Reidinger.Â
