ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Katie MacLachlan scored 19 points for the Nazareth University Women's Basketball team and led four Golden Flyers into double digits in a convincing 80-69 win over SUNY Geneseo Wednesday night at Kidera Gymnasium.
Fellow sophomore Kiara Anglin added 15 points while freshmen Sarina McDowell and Madalyn Kelly came off the bench to score 15 and 10 points respectively. McDowell was 6-for-6 from the floor and Anglin led the Golden Flyers (6-1) with seven rebounds. Sophomore Molly Benetti chipped in eight points and six rebounds in the balanced attack.
Geneseo (4-3) jumped out to an early lead with an 18-13 advantage after the first quarter but the Nazareth offense started to click in the second period. A 3-pointer by MacLachlan with three minutes remaining in the period gave Nazareth a lead at 31-29 and after a Geneseo basket to tie the game, the Golden Flyers rattled off eight straight points including 3-pointers by junior Madilann Johnson and Kelly to pus the lead to eight points at 39-31.
The score was 39-32 at the break.
Nazareth connected on 10-of-17 shots (59 percent) in the second quarter to recover from the first quarter deficit.
In the third quarter, Nazareth stayed hot hitting 62% from the field and extended the lead to double digits at 58-47 after three periods.
Despite full-court pressure from the Geneseo defense, Nazareth built a lead of as much as 19 points in the final period before a late Knights rally trimmed the lead. Nazareth had a 67% shooting effort in the final quarter and finished the game hitting 29-of-54 shots (53.7%).
Nazareth will close out the first semester schedule Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against SUNY Brockport at Kidera Gym.
